Mankind Divided remains beautiful 4 years after release, but you can't smash up all the furniture in Miller's office like you could with Manderley's.ĭeus Ex 1 has somewhat janky controls and combat mechanics, and nigh-braindead enemy AI, but it never holds your hand or holds you back from doing what you need or want to do. To me, Mankind Divided surpasses Human Revolution in all ways that matter, and Invisible War fails to stack up to any of them.ĭeus Ex 1 is an RPG with action game elements, Mankind Divided is an action game with RPG elements.ĭeus Ex 1 looks ugly and dated, but nearly every object in the game world can be interacted with or destroyed. Most of my complaints are for things attempted that were bad ideas to attempt even in a vacuum.I think they are equally tied as the best games in the series. I understood the narrative and themes well and can separate intent from delivery but it’s very clear that many people dislike Cyberpunk for things it never tried.

The entire theme of Cyberpunk the game is to metaphorically bury and scold the past heroes for their failures to actually enact changes they and many many thousands died for. This bears a lot of comparisons to the high vs low fantasy debates from many decades ago that transferred to games at least. I suspect CDPR thought about this and tried to bridge the modern ideas of the cyberpunk genre (Deus Ex being a prime example) with the historical source material. With that said, games like Disco Elysium are excellent, but it will never sell as many copies as Cyberpunk or GTA or other games where you as the protagonist can inflict mass destruction and make a mockery of real world struggles. We see this in movies as well, but it’s super rare outside art house movies and horror to see anti-heroes. This isn’t to say that anti-heroes aren’t received well in games, but gamers as a culture seem to universally want heroes of some sort where they feel powerful and have control.

I think Cyberpunk the game is showing some of the problems with how the game industry has taken the literary genre full of anti-heroes and mockery of classic models and infused it with the boring power fantasy that makes up gaming so tough. Oh and lastly Deus Ex Mankind Divided was stable at launch. In Deus Ex the side content works so well that it often doesn't even feel like you are doing a side mission. Most of the side content in Cyberpunk feels tacked on and distracting, especially the fixer gigs which all feel the same.

On a high end PC cyberpunk has the edge but on console Deus Ex Mankind Divided looks much better despite being over 4 years older.ĭeus Ex has better side content that feels well integrated into the main game.

In Deus Ex it feels like every place you see has some layer of intrigue and exploring your surroundings is rewarding and often leads to cool discoveries. The open world in Cyberpunk is mostly empty. In Cyberpunk you cannot even pick up and throw objects to distract guards. In MD it feels like you are fighting for something worthwhile while Cyberpunk is a game where you are just trying to save your own ass which doesn't seem that appealing considering how horrible the world of Cyberpunk is.ĭeus Ex MD has a much smaller but much much more detailed hub based world with a much greater degree of interactivity. Cyberpunk's world feels too detached from reality, almost like a fantasy game.

Many of the themes of discrimination and conspiracy theories draw from real life parallels which make the world believable and relatable. Story and setting feels more grounded in reality. In Cyberpunk lethal VS non lethal feels exactly the same. The different builds for lethal VS non lethal playtbroughs truly feel different and fun in their own way which makes you want to replay it. Also the game makes an effort to explain how the augmentation are physiologically possible unlike Cyberpunk where most of it doesn't seem plausible. Every augmentation feels unique, fun, and relevant in some way. Much much better augmentation and levelling system.
